5 Halal Pantry Staples I Always Have On Hand

When I first started eating strictly halal, one of the things nobody told me was how much of cooking halal at home comes down to what you keep in your pantry. Get the basics right and weeknight meals stop being stressful. You stop scrambling for substitutions. You just cook.

These are the five things I genuinely keep stocked at all times. Not a sponsored list. Just what I actually use.

1. Royal Basmati Rice

This is the one. Long grain, fragrant, cooks evenly every time. I use it for halal cart rice, biryani, and just plain rice under whatever protein I’m making that night. It’s available at almost every grocery store in the US now, Target, Walmart, Kroger, all of them. A big bag lasts a long time and the price is reasonable.

2. Toum (Lebanese Garlic Sauce)

I have talked about toum on this site before and I will keep talking about it. This garlic sauce goes on everything. Shawarma wraps, grilled chicken, rice bowls, sandwiches. If you’ve never had it, it’s like a fluffy, whipped garlic aioli and it is addictive. Most Middle Eastern grocery stores carry it. You can also find it on Amazon.

3. A Spice Affair Shawarma Blend

Halal certified spice blends are genuinely useful when you want big flavor without measuring out eight different spices. This one is specifically formulated for shawarma and it’s really good. I use it on chicken thighs, ground beef, even roasted vegetables. Amazon has it and it ships fast.

4. Halal Certified Chicken Broth

This one sneaks up on people. Regular chicken broth is often made with non-halal chicken and you’d never know unless you read the label carefully. I use broth in rice, soups, and sauces constantly so having a halal certified option always in the pantry matters. Pacific Foods makes a good one. Check your local Whole Foods or order online.

5. Pomegranate Molasses

This is the secret weapon. It looks like a syrup and it tastes like sweet, slightly tart concentrated pomegranate. A tiny drizzle at the end of a shawarma wrap or over a chicken bowl changes the whole flavor profile. Once you start using it you will wonder what you were doing before. Middle Eastern grocery stores always have it and it’s usually inexpensive.

These five things will make your halal cooking at home taste significantly better with almost no extra effort. Stock your pantry once and you’ll have the foundation for dozens of meals.
